Saint Mark's Youth serve the Sunday Lunch Program hot meal to people waiting in line

From Deacon Susie Fowler:

Compassion on the Hungry

During this time of uncertainty and changed patterns in our lives, our generosity to the hungry has never been more important.

Evening Meals to Ascencia January through June 2024

Saint Mark's is the guest chef on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Teams gather at the Saint Mark's kitchen to prepare the meal. The team leader develops the menu and does the shopping or divides the shopping among the team members. Saint Mark's provides plates, utensils, napkins, and beverage cups. We also reimburse the cost of the food and beverages. Teams then take the meal to Ascencia by 5:30 pm and serve the residents there. Typically, we serve about 40 residents on our Saturdays. If you have questions, please email Dcn. Susie at susie@saintmarks.la.

Ascencia is a full service shelter for men, women and families working their way out of homelessness.

Thank you to the following guest chefs to Ascencia for the first half of 2024:

  • Saturday, January 20:  Team Lead Monique Poon; Frans Vischer, Louis Quezon, Gavin Lewis and Andy Adams assisting

  • Saturday, February 17: Team lead Carol Holden; Monique Poon, the Eller’s and Louis Quezon assisting

  • Saturday, March 16: Team lead Alma Saghi; Frances Impert, Joanne Weidman and Gavin Lewis assisting

  • Saturday, April 20: Seward-Sebaldt Family.

  • Saturday, May 18: Team lead Tim Williams with sons Ben and Sam; Janet Lawler and Carolina Correa-Lawler assisting

  • Saturday, June 15: Aida Simonian and family

Ascencia Needs Additional Meals

Saint Mark's provides a dinner meal on the third Saturday of every month, thanks to wonderful members of this parish. Ascencia, though, has gaps in their guest chef calendar, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you can provide one of those meals in the next month, please sign up using their Sign-Up Genius:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044fa9aa2aaafc1-ascencias. (When you click the link, just scroll down the home page that is displayed to see available dates and meals needed.) You can prepare the meals yourself (for 45 residents) and deliver to Ascencia, or you can order from a restaurant and have them deliver to Ascencia. If you sign up to provide for a meal using the Sign-Up Genius link, please email Deacon Susie Fowler to let her know the date and meal you selected to serve, so that we can publicly acknowledge you.

Sunday Lunch Program

The Sunday Lunch Program, is an informally organized cooperative of faith communities who work together to provide a hot Sunday afternoon meal to the hungry and unhoused in Glendale. Faith partners rotate throughout the year in hosting the Sunday lunches on their premises. Saint Mark's is host in November. We need volunteers to plan, prepare and serve our guests buffet style. The meals will be served at 1 pm. Food planning and prep teams can use the Saint Mark's kitchen and will gather together to do so at the convenience of each team--the day before or Sunday after the 10 am Mass. To get involved, email Deacon Susie Fowler at susie@saintmarks.la.

Typically, we need 3 or 4 persons per team. We are VERY grateful for those who have volunteered below!

November 2024 dates and the call for volunteers will be posted mid year.

ANOTHER WAY TO HELP: Hand made crocheted and knitted hats and scarves are given out on the last Sunday in November at the SLP lunch, something our guests always look forward to receiving. We are grateful to Lisa Marie DeRoma for heading up the hat and scarf ministry here at Saint Mark for our Sunday Lunch Program guests, and you are invited to help by making a hat or scarf (or one of each!). Bring your items to the church by the Sunday before Thanksgiving and please include your name in the bag. Need help getting started on a hat or scarf? No problem. Reach out to Lisa Marie at lisaderoma@netzero.net.  She will be happy to help get you started.
